At the age of seven, John traveled to the Philippine Islands with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. John H. Hanks, and his brother Jim, age five. The family was on the way to the Island of Culion, Palawan, where “Pop” was
to study Leprosy, under the auspices of the
Leonard Wood Memorial Society. Here the family thrived in a tropical “paradise” until the World War II started in 1941.
John’s story is a collection of his stories and remembrances before, during and after the war. It is the story of a remarkable and brave life. “Pop” often said that he had taken “little boys with him to the Philippines, but returned with men!” at the ages of 11 and 13.
